In the last two days, dozens of men, women
and children have been killed in bomb explosions and hundreds more have been
severely injured. The focus of the attacks is in Baghdad, but the killing
continues elsewhere as well.
When these bombs suddenly
explode, buildings are rocked and some collapse as shards of glass and building
materials are rocketed like shrapnel. The flames emit a stench and their smoke
can be seen across a great distance, terrifying other people who fear for the
next explosion.
With no warning, people who had lives only a heartbeat
earlier are now dead or wounded and their families are about to receive
devastating news.
Saddam Hussein was a brutal tyrant but since the U.S.
invasion that deposed him more than 10 years ago, hundreds of thousands of
Iraqis and others have lost their lives, and many more people bear the permanent
scars of war, including all the children who have been orphaned, and/or the
children who live with missing limbs.
Is there a solution to all this
violence that continues even as you read this message Dear Reader? There is if
only the warring parties would heed it. It is to call a cease fire and to sit
down together and in all sincerity, discuss the issues and peacefully resolve
them together.
The solution seems so obvious but instead men's egos cry
out for revenge and for power, and an eye for an eye prevails in which humanity,
including children, are sacrificed.
Let us hope that wiser heads will
prevail and for peace and stability in Iraq and for a prosperous society that
only peace can bring. In the meantime, my heart cries out for our Iraqi
brethren.
