A Little Brown Teddy Bear

Over Ukraine a commercial airliner with 298 people is shot out of the sky. Israel invades Gaza leaving many dead men, women and children in its wake. Similar wars rage in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan and elsewhere.

All of this bloodshed is committed in God's name or to fight "The War on Terror" or for national security or for some other purpose that supposedly serves mankind.

But to illustrate the impact of these wars, I'd like to paint the following scenario for you: Laying on the floor of what used to be a home is a small brown Teddy Bear about two feet tall. He has button eyes, a little round black nose and he is wearing a blue scarf. His warm smile touches one's heart.

He belonged to a little girl, who used to cuddle him during the day and she would tuck him in with her at night before she would go to sleep.

But now that Teddy Bear is homeless and there is nobody to love him. For in a heartbeat his home was destroyed as was the little girl who treasured him.

What remains of her deeply traumatized family is tearfully making its way to a mass overwhelmed homeless shelter, even as the fighting continues and the ground is rocked with explosions.

Perhaps someone could explain this madness so that it makes sense, explain how it uplifts mankind or serves God in some way. But that explanation will have to be a loud one to be heard over the sounds of exploding rockets and machine gun fire.
