Notes From Peace Demonstrations: Iraq Government Fires On Protesters, 1/25/13

Last Friday in Falluja, the Iraq military fired on protesters, some of whom were throwing rocks. Seven people were killed and as many as 70 more were wounded. Later, in retaliation, three Iraq soldiers were shot and killed. http://original.antiwar.com/updates/2013/01/25/iraqi-troops-fire-on-protesters-14-killed-72-wounded-across-country/

These current public protests against the government began in December, but this is the first time the military fired on the protesters.

It is heartbreaking to see Iraq in such a horrible state, as life there is so miserable, that even with the civil war in neighboring Syria, Iraqis who fled to Syria during the U.S. War don't return home.

It is my hope that Iraqis will find a way to live peacefully together but for now that seems unlikely given an Iraq government that operates from within the heavily secured U.S. Green Zone, rather than one closely involved in solving the many urgent problems of its people.

Let us hope a more enlightened accessible Iraq government will arise.
